FEATURE: Women going it alone

In Indonesia, extreme poverty has resulted in an estimated nine million households headed by women.

These women may be widowed, abandoned by their husbands, single mothers or divorcees.



PEKKA (Women Headed Households Empowerment) is a local NGO which helps over 500 grassroots groups of poor, female-headed households in 18 provinces of Indonesia to seek support and access to justice.

Nani Zulminarni, the national coordinator of PEKKA told Radio Australia's Asia Pacific News that sadly, Indonesia is seeing an increase in women headed households each year.
